Principal photography began in June 2017 in Oakland. Sorry to Bother You premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 6, 2018, by Annapurna Pictures. The film received acclaim from critics, who praised the cast and concept, as well as Riley's script and direction.

In June 2017, many of the original cast confirmed their involvement, with James being cast in the role of Young Donna that July.
